Tonight's Listen:

Patsy Cline - Imagine That: The Lost Recordings (1954-1963)

What a godsend for fans of classic country music: Nearly two hours of rare radio, TV, and concert performances from one of Nashville's greatest-ever singers. Patsy Cline was one of those vocalists who could make a weak song compelling and a good song timeless. Despite looking like a budget compilation at a glance, Imagine That: The Lost Recordings is the real deal, presenting these unreleased performances in (generally) good sound and accompanied by a beefy booklet. The main draw here is the inclusion of numerous songs she never recorded in the studio, even if the renditions are sometimes woefully short, and occasionally with audio quality more akin to Patsy Montana's era than Cline's. A number of the tracks are duets where she sings circles around various yokels who never come close to matching her prowess. The demo version of "Have I Told You Lately That I Love You" justifies this entire set, which is one of the best testaments to a talent lost far too soon. Essential for any fan of Patsy or classic country in general.
