All Simeone did was update "Catenaccio" for the modern era to compete with the big money clubs. Anonymous No.157975441
After the endless controversies and corruption that have plagued big clubs like Barcelona, Real Madrid, Man City, Bayern, Man United, PSG, Chelsea, Milan, Juve, etc, anyone else have a new appreciation for what Simeone accomplished with Atletico?
Simeone took a club that was ranked 10th in La Liga and drowning in debt and - within a few years and without any major sugardaddies in the initially - he had them winning La Liga, defeating Real Madrid in the Copa del Rey final, and playing in two Champions League finals. And he did this during the Messi/Ronaldo era. You can also argue that the 2016 UCL was stolen from them since Sergio Ramos's goal was offside. I would also argue that during this era Real Madrid had much "dirtier" players like Ramos, Pepe, and Casemiro. Atletico's defenders in that era like Diego Godin were world-class and had a cleaner record. If Falcao had stuck around and not gotten injured, Atletico probably wins a UCL.
His tactics got smeared as "haramball" by Barca fans who think a high line or possession-based style is the only "correct" way to play football. These people would've also branded the classic Italian defensive teams as "haramball" (and they did with mid-2010s Juve), as if Barca and Madrid players never dived or fouled.
